“The mission of the Youth Orchestra of the Lower 9th Ward (YOL9W) is to foster academic achievement, cultivate artistic expression, and promote the healthy growth and development of children in New Orleans through culturally relevant music instruction and performance.”
Youth Orchestra of the Lower Ninth Ward is an after school program, which runs Monday-Thursday from 3:30 -6:30 PM throughout the school year. The program consists of quality music instruction implemented by a diverse staff of professional musicians and college students. The program includes sessions such as violin classes, and musicianship classes (including singing, recording and drumming).
YOLNW also provides opportunities to participate in workshops with guest artists, local musicians and community relevant performances. Additionally, the children receive a healthy snack, help with homework, an evening meal, and transportation to those who need it. Currently 42 children from local elementary schools are enrolled in the program. They have located at Arise Aademy, KIPP Leadership Primary, and the All Souls Church and Community Center.
YOL9W offers full scholarships to all of its students. Once a student joins the program, we commit to their education until they graduate from high school. All students enrolled in musicianship classes this year will be assigned instruments next year, Fall 2014.
YOL2W is kicking off the season with the“Lower Nine Growing Strong Kickoff” at Guerilla Garden on August 24th 2013, hosted by Backyard Gardeners Network. They have 2 fundraising campaigns at Midway Pizza and the Rusty Nail, a silent auction and a performance at Generations Hall all planned within the next month!
The Youth Orchestra of the Lower Ninth Ward is helping to cultivate a new generation on musicians and maintain New Orleans deep history of performers. This organizations allows students, no matter their means, to learn about basic musicianship at an early age and grow into their love of music through their grade school years. The YOL9W serves as a program to help keep kids in a safe, productive environment after the school day is over, and foster a sense of self-worth and dedication to their talents.
Mapping Non-Profit Influence: The Case of the Lower Ninth Ward
CAPSTONE is one of many organizations that have worked to restore the Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina. As part of a larger study of the impact and networks of of non-profits in 2013 (please see Mapping Non-Profit Influence: The Case of the Lower Ninth Ward for more details), we can see that this organization excels in the following areas:
1. Access to Consumers regardless of ability to pay
The services provided by YOL9W are completely free. While students do need to register for the program, there is not an application process to exclude some students from participating
2. Provisions of Collective Goods
YOL9W provides the collective good of a musical education. They engage in information sharing activities which enhance not only students, but the whole community in which these students live and learn each day.
Participation in Information Sharing
When we analyze the Youth Orchestra of the Lower Ninth Ward based on its extent of participation in information sharing activities, we see they are active in 4 ways:
The primary goal of the YOL9W is to educate young students about music.
They are dedicated to training interested students in order to help them become life long musicians.
3. Capacity Building
The education and training they provide enables these students to acquire important skills needed for success later in life.
YOL9W has a number of partners around the city and has an active connection with 1 other organization in this study (Backyard Gardeners Network).
